Appalachian Chapter
Annual Report
July 1, 2006 - June 30, 2007

Our Mission

The American Red Cross is a humanitarian organization, led by volunteers, that provides relief to victims of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. It does this through services that are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross Movement.
These seven fundamental principles are:
Humanity
Impartiality
Neutrality
Independence
Voluntary Service
Unity
Universality

Our History

The American Red Cross began in 1881 as a disaster relief organization formed by Clara Barton. The Anderson County Chapter of the American Red Cross was chartered in 1918, and the Oak Ridge Chapter of the American Red Cross was chartered in 1947. In 1987 the Anderson County Chapter and the Oak Ridge Chapter merged together to form the Appalachian Chapter.

The Appalachian Chapter is an independent, nonprofit organization that is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of local leadership volunteers. The Chapter receives approximately one third of its operating revenue from the United Way of Anderson County, but relies on health and safety services revenues and the generosity of the American people through direct donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and others to fund the remainder of the costs of providing vital Red Cross programs and services in this area. We would like to thank all of our donors, supporters and volunteers for helping us deliver quality Red Cross services to people in the Appalachian area.

Our Services

Disaster Relief – 125 people from twenty-seven families received disaster relief assistance this year from the Appalachian Chapter. Financial assistance provided to these families in Oak Ridge and Anderson County totaled $19,738.

Community Disaster Education – Approximately 1,675 people attended American Red Cross Disaster Services presentations and demonstrations. More than 3,500 brochures about specific types of disasters explaining how to be better prepared for emergencies were distributed to people in Oak Ridge and Anderson County. 2,200 children participated in Masters of Disaster lessons and activities.

Armed Forces Emergency Services - Red Cross workers provided one hundred sixteen services to members of the Armed Forces and their families. Services included emergency communications, counseling, health and welfare reports, birth announcements, death, illness, leave extensions, information and referral, and casework follow-up.

Health and Safety Services – Four hundred twenty-three American Red Cross Health and Safety Services courses were taught this year with 3,275 participants. Courses included First Aid and CPR, Aquatics and Water Safety, Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Blood Borne Pathogens, and instructor training.

Community Volunteer Services - The Appalachian Chapter utilizes volunteer and paid staff in providing all American Red Cross services and programs. We maintain an active volunteer program to ensure that volunteers are recruited, oriented, trained, and placed in a manner that supports the mission and priorities of the American Red Cross. Last year 336 volunteers provided more than 1,500 community services. Chapter volunteers included 38 Health & Safety volunteers, 222 volunteers in Disaster Services, 18 fund raising volunteers, and 58 people in volunteer leadership positions.
